ABOUT George Camp Keiser Library
The Library has a collection of 25,000 books in Western languages and more than 300 periodicals. It has the largest collection of materials on the Middle East in the Washington area, outside the Library of Congress.
The Library specializes in current events, history, culture, economics, religion, politics, and languages of the Middle East. The Middle East is defined by the Institute as those countries stretching from Morocco to Pakistan, including Turkey and the countries of Central Asia. The Library has especially good collections on Islam and Islamic art. The recently inventoried rare book collection contains accounts by early scholars and travellers.
The George Camp Keiser Library is open to the public for reference, but borrowing privileges are restricted to MEI members. The library is open 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is also open 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday evenings when language classes are in session. For 2004, language classes are scheduled for January 26 to March 22, April 19 to June 14, July 6 to August 30, and October 12 to December 9.
Library staff can be contacted at library@mideasti.org or (202) 785-0183.
