ATA-DC Teachers' Workshop:
An 18 Year Success Story
"...designed to provide instructional materials to increase appreciation of the rich and multifaceted Ottoman-Turkish culture and the modern Turkish Republic.". These were the words stating the mission of the first Teachers Workshop, held on March 7, 1987. ATA president Dr. Engin Inel Holmstrom, event chairperson Bekir Onursal, and other ATA-DC faithful acted on an idea presented by then Ambassador Sukru Elekdag. The Workshop was carefully crafted to coincide with the “Age of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent” exhibition at the National Gallery of Art. The workshop was a tremendous success.
ATA-DC has come a long way, and so has the Teachers Workshop. More compact, yet to the point and with same vigor, the program offers area teachers the opportunity to increase their appreciation of the rich Turkish culture. Over the last 18 years, we have enlightened over 800 educators on Turkey with topics ranging from archeology, to women rights, history, the Turkish family, and Turkish art. We have found the Workshop to be one of the most effective ways in which to communicate to members of the non-Turkish community about Turkey.
