“ Homage to Homeros ” Exhibit to Introduce Artwork of Turkish and American Artists
|
|
“ Homage to Homeros,” an art exhibition featuring artwork by Turkish and American artists, will open at the Second City Council Art Gallery in Long Beach March 27. The artwork will be open for public viewing on Saturday, March 27th and Sunday, March 28th from 12:00 noon till 5:00 pm. The evening reception will start at 6:00 pm on Saturday, March 27th and introduce the city of Izmir and Turkey, as well as sister-city program activities, to the Southern California community. “ Homage to Homeros ” reception will feature the artists and key note speakers accompanied by authentic music.

“Izmir Retrospective” Exhibit to Share Artifacts of Turkish Culture

Long Beach, Calif., Feb. 25, 2010—“Izmir Retrospective,” an art exhibition featuring artifacts from Izmir, Turkey, will open at the Second City Council Art Gallery in Long Beach March 13. “Izmir Retrospective” will run through May 5.

TURKISH WOMEN WHO DARE screened at the Art Theatre of Long Beach, CA on Mar. 20. Izmir-Long Beach Sister Cities Association and Turkish Women's Initiative presented the screening as part of a benefit for the Izmir Grove park. Binnur Karaevli’s “Voices Unveiled: Turkish Women Who Dare” is an intimate, feature-length documentary that explores the clash of East and the West through the lives of three modern Turkish women – a dancer, an artist, and an activist – who struggle to find their own voices in a traditional world.

“Biblical Treasures of Turkey,” a breathtaking journey that brings to life the story of St. John, St. Paul and the seven churches of the Bible, made its cinematic premiere in Long Beach at the newly renovated and reopened Art Theater of Long Beach on Aug. 18, as well as promoted an upcoming tour of the same theme. “Izmir, Turkey, is a place of beauty and fascinating historical significance. The connection between that city and ours is unique and vibrant, and one we trust all the residents of Long Beach can find exciting.”

Grim forecast for L.A. and Long Beach ports

The busiest U.S. seaport complex won't fully recover from the economic downturn until 2013, a report says. Imports at both facilities fell in July from a year earlier. As the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach post another round of dismal monthly import statistics, a new assessment finds that the nation's busiest seaport complex will need at least four more years to fully recover its momentum -- not to mention the jobs, incomes and revenues that went with it -- after the worst global recession in 60 years.

Arup designed Arts Centre opens in Izmir, Turkey

In March 2009, the newly completed Ahmed Adnan Saygun Arts Centre in Izmir, Turkey, designed by Arup and Tozkoparan Architects, opened its doors to the public for the opening performance of the 16th European Jazz Festival. Grammy award winning American jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater was accompanied by the Istanbul Big Band to critical acclaim.

Historical Airgas Factory is Now a Culture and Art Center

Izmir opened the restored Airgas Factory with “Harvest Season” celebrations. The historical site is now put into service as an "art and culture center" hosting a coffee shop, exhibition halls and art galleries.
